Everyone likes a good quote.

I have many favorite quotes, but speaking of photography I love the one from  Herman Melville whose books I read as a young girl.  “It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation” he says. He doesn’t mean we don’t have to learn from the others. We do have to learn a lot if we don’t want to keep reinventing  the wheel. What we don’t have to do is compromising our vision.

If you have time, please watch this loving tribute to a great master. RIP Marvell Smith.

Please share your favorite quote with me, and tell why it touched your heart.

Tip of the day: Study your camera manual.

  1. Your Melville quote reminded me of my favorite, and I don’t know who said it! “Cleverness is never a substitute for originality.” Looking for the author of this, I found one you might like:
“I am sick to death of cleverness. Everybody is clever nowadays. You can’t go anywhere without meeting clever people. The thing has become an absolute public nuisance. I wish to goodness we had a few fools left.”

    1. Oscar Wilde never fails me:) He has a quote for everything, and for every time. Love him since I first read his books as a teenager. What an exquisite soul! Thank you for your find. The video is a tribute to Marvell Smith. He never called himself anything but a Wedding Photographer, even that he was a true Artist. This is his video Posing for passion and purpose https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es4msCV54CU.
